I experimented with many different colours to find the style I wanted, these are a few of my favourites.

Prints screen of final product
firstly I picked a photo that I thought was most suitable for a front cover of a rock/alternative magazine and uploaded it on photoshop.

I thought this was the most suitable because he is giving the audience eye contact, I also like the pose he is doing and the choice of background as it creates a 'grungy' look. The only problem was that it was landscape not portrait and their wasn't enough room above his head to put a mast head. By cloning the existing boards I began to recreate the top of the image. This took time as it had to be a perfect match to look convincing.
As I was doing this I airbrushed the sides to make it fit more. I also used the layer mask tool which faded the cloned piece into the existing piece.
End result. After this I emerged this image as one so it became less hassle as if I was trying to move something it wouldn't move each single board.
I then began to reduce the vibrancy to make it look duller, I think this is a great idea for my magazine as most rock/grunge/alternative magazines use this technique.
I then made the grey part of the eye white, as it makes it look more eye catching.
I used the patch tool to get rid of all imperfections on his face to make it look more smooth but natural at the same time.
As most people involved with rock music have piercings etc, I decided to liquefy his ear so I have enough room to insert a tunnel ( image from google, cropped and pasted into ear)
Result of ear after I used the blur tool to make it look more realistic.

As I thought the writing on his shirt would interfere with headlines on my magazine I decided to get rid of it by using the clone tool.
For my mast head I decided I wanted something bold so I decided to outline my mast head by using a stoke effect and drop shadow.
As the mast head was simple and short, I decided to hide it behind my model by using the eraser tool.

I ten began to add a skyline, still following the colour scheme as it makes it look more professional.
After adding the writing on skyline using an arial font, so it makes it easy to read.
I then added a barcode to the bottom of my magazine.
After this I added my main storyline making it bigger then the other stories, using similar effects from the mast head like the sroke effect.

End Result.

Photos for Magazine
This wasn't suitable as a front cover image as their is no eye contact so therefore this is unconventional.
I like this image as I wanted him to look quiet 'thugish'. This could also be easily made smaller to use as a front cover image.
This image I disliked the pose and his hair is in his face again to much!
I thought about using this but I think his hand takes up to much of the image and it could become a problem to write text on it.
I don't think this can be used as it isn't clear enough and there is houses in the background which don't make it looks very professional.

This image I believe wasn't suitable as it was to close up and the eye contact is limited as his hair is over his face. Also there is not enough room to put a skyline above.

Attempt at airbrushing on Photoshop
I have used many tools to make her completion look better. firstly I used the clone tool to get rid of her imperfections such as her spots, I did this by cloning a piece of her skin that was clear and pasting it over her spots and freckles. Secondly I cut out her skin twice on two separate layers and made one lighter and slightly transparent and the other darker, this creates a more even and lighter tone. Lastly I used the warp tool to made her look thinner.
I will use this in my magazine to make my band member look more even but I will not over use like on this image as the band member shows the real him. Also rock/alternative magazines tend to avoid the image to look perfect as this kind of music isn't soft.
Name of my magazine
Unplugged- I like this name as it could be metaphorical for finding out more about a band members life.
Lava- I like this because it is short and memorable.
Code- This was my original name choice for my magazine, I like it because people's dress code is a big indication of what music they like and what there personality is like.
Revive- This means regain life, I like this because it connects with my band name and sounds catchy.
Volt- Short, simple and original. this is the name I am going to use.
Voltage- force is expressed in volts, this makes the magazine seem like a big expression of rock/alternative music.

Inspirations for my magazine
These photo's of a Day To Remember, a famous rock/alternative band from America. I like the first photo because it's very casual, even though he is very successful the vocalist seems to be in a room that looks very personalised as some people would call is vandalism ( tags on the walls ), this could show that even though he is very successful he still can be like a normal rock/alternative inspired person without spending loads of money and looking really done up... this shows a grungy look.
The second photo I like because even though an image is still you can tell that there is a lot of life in that room by the audiences hands and the way ADTR's vocalist is standing. It also shows he connects with the audience, which is an important part of being successful.

Ideas
I changed the contrast on this image to make it more bold and eye catching
-Here are some images I have taken at a gig of All Time Low I went to last February, these inspire me for my double page spread.
Name Of My Band
The main aim of my bands style is to be rebellious and original. The name of my band I have decided it to be Sons Of The Pope as the Pope in modern day society isn't allowed to have children or sexual relations because he is married to the church, this rebels religion.
I created this on a font generator the font is called 'made with b' I like this font because it's eye catching and unusual. For my main image on my front cover I'm using two band members Adam and Alistair. These both people have a passion for my genre of music.
I have decided to change the name of my band, because many young alternative/rock influenced people may not understand the meaning of this. I have created a new name for my band which I believe is more suitable and unique, this font will be shown on the double page spread.
Amidst definition -In the midst or middle of; surrounded or encompassed by; among.
Ideology Of My Magazine
The main point I want to put across about my rock/alternative magazine is that is rebellious and out there. My main image on my front cover will be to band members of BuryThePriest or SonsOfThePope which rejects religion. This will connect to the younger generation as young people tend to be more daring and usually don't follow the norms and values of society. My magazine is aims to inspire to be created for people that have a passion for music, attend gigs and are inspired by other successful alternative/rock artists. My choice of alternative rock shows that it rejects mainstream music and shows a path of individuality which creates a new fashion.

Institution Of My Magazine
I found an Institution called Development Hell Limited who are an independent media company based in Islington, London. This media company at the moment currently publishes a monthly magazine MixMag which is a dance and clubbing based magazine. This company are some of the most experienced and respected operators in British magazines including Editorial Director of Q and Smash Hits, David Hepworth. I believe my magazine would be perfect for this company to take on because there isn't a rock/alternative magazine in this market. Also Development Hell's successful MixMag is also aimed at young lively people who have a love for music as well as mine. Even though my magazine and this MixMag are very different genres I believe it would give the company the chance to experiment more and try to reach a wider market of young people.
This is one of MixMag's front covers.

Target Audience
The target audience for my magazine will be aimed at the younger generation both male and female. I have chosen this because my main music genres in my magazine will be rock/alternative which are listened to mainly by the under twenty fives. I want my magazine to make young people aspire to be in the music industry by inserting younger bands that are trying to become successful or are already successful in the magazines main stories and images. The readers I want to buy my magazine are people that eat, sleep and dream rock/alternative music who are totally dedicated to what they listen too and not afraid to be original and out there. I will focus on the biggest things that are going on in our world each week, as well as guaranteeing that I am giving our main base of younger readers everything they need to get into, on top of this the interest in older, harder bands, cementing our role as an educator. The social class I'd like to aim my magazine at are C2,D and E considering most young adults will struggle to find jobs because of the increase in unemployment so therefore the cost of each issue will be affordable but still good quality. I have also chosen these social classes because nearly all bands start at the bottom of society and don't necessarily need a lot of money to become successful. Magazines such as NME, Kerrang and Metal Hammer have influenced my decision for my target audience.

Conventions Of Magazine
Institution- The publisher is IPC Media, IPC Media produces over 60 iconic media brands, with print alone reaching almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men- almost 26 million UK adults- while they're websites collectively reach over 20 million users every month. NME is a popular music magazine published weekly since 1952.NME sells thousands of magazines every month!
Ideology- The consumer culture is southern rock as that's what Kings Of Leon base there music on. The clothes they are wearing seem to be quiet casual for there music genre. The NME promotes consumption of new "indie" music produced by mostly white male guitar bands and solo artists to an audience which is approaching 70% male. It aspired to be one step ahead of mainstream popular music chart showing successful bands.
Audience- The main audience is readers that believe that music is a big part of there lives, people who like to listen to new bands.52% readers of the NME are interested in taking a musical course/qualification. By putting a popular band on the front cover I think that NME are trying to interest young people epically males because of the colours and the bands shown.
Representation- The band are communicating through eye contact, this is important because it makes the audience feel more involved. The clothing is casual and the pose is simple and not very interesting or crazy.. this usually portrays there personality. From my research of Kings Of Leon shows a change of style, maybe this image is trying to show there new clean cut style created with there new album although there is still a sign of the old style of the band but it is very discrete ( roughness )
Kings Of Leon's old image!
Language- The main image on this front cover is Foo Fighters giving eye contact. The lead singer is standing slightly in front of the other band members. The main colours are red, yellow, black and white, this is the house style. Around three different types of fonts are used in this front cover. The main font is a San serif font which makes it more clear. The smaller headings are also similar. There is also a smaller image of another band member in the bottom left hand corner.
Institution- Metal Hammer is a monthly heavy metal music magazine published in the United kingdom by Future Publishing, and in several other countries by different publishers. Metal Hammer articles feature both mainstream bands and more unusual acts from the whole spectrum of heavy metal music. It is the largest selling metal music magazine in the UK, currently outselling Kerrang!
Ideology- Metal Hammer articles feature both mainstream bands and more unusual acts. The rock/metal clothing style attaches with this.
Audience- The main music style is a rock genre this would attract people who like heavy metal/rock and alternative music. Also in metal hammer there is a lot of rock fashion. I'd say that it is aimed at people who like this kind of music and fashion.
Representation- The image represents Foo Fighters to be fun and interesting. The lead singer is holding out his arm to look like he's going to shake the readers hand, this shows the band are approachable and happy because of there faces. ( Don't take the world to seriously ).
Language- The main image of this front cover from Q magazine is LADY Gaga. The image shows her centre in the magazine giving the audience eye contact. She's half naked and has her hands ( with claws) hiding her breasts. This could show that she is confident and content with her body. The main house style is black, red and white. There are also two main San serif fonts in a range of different sizes, the main colours of these are white and black this compliments they grey background.
Institution- Q is a popular magazine in the United Kingdom published monthly by Bauer Media Group.Bauer Media owns more than eighty influential media brands spanning a wide range of interests, including heat, GRAZIA, Closer, MCN, FHM, Parkers, MATCH, Magic 105.4, Kiss 100, Kerrang. The magazine has a close relationship with the Glastonbury Festival, producing both a free daily newspaper on site during the festival and a review magazine available at the end of the festival.
Ideology- The magazine has an extensive review section: new releases, film and live concert reviews as well as radio and television reviews. Much of the magazine is devoted to interviews and popular music artists. The magazine is well known for compiling lists. It has created many, ranging from "The 100 Greatest albums" to the "100 Greatest '100 Greatest' Lists". Every other month, Q — and its sister magazine, Mojo (also owned by Bauer) — have a special edition. These have been about musical times, genres, or a very important/influential musician.
Audience- Q magazine gives a comprehensive coverage of the current music scene, while not forgetting the trends of yeastier years.Q's audience is composed of passionate, engaged and open minded music fans driven to continually discover new music - and to use this lust for discovery to influence their friends. The audience is split 75% male to 25% female and is affluent (with 68% ABC1).
Representation- The image on this front cover shows the artists Lady Gaga to be rebellious and confident as she is half naked covering her breasts with a claw. It also shows her to have a big personality as the image is outside the box. The Lady Gaga cover of the new Q Magazine has been banned in it's full visual form in the U.S. due to what Janet Jackson's PR firm would possibly have called a 'glove malfunction'. Lady Gaga is shown to be reckless and interesting from this one original image.
Language- The main house style of this contents page that is a part of NME magazine is red, black and white, these compliment each other because they make the information easy to read. The biggest image on this contents page is of the famous band member Diddy. This image shows him moshing, this related to the story below. This image doesn't show eye contact but the front cover does, this draws the reader in. The layout is structured so everything is spaced out, which again makes it easy to read. Graphics are also used below the main story. The font is all San serif, which makes it modern.
Institution- The publisher is IPC media. NME is a popular music magazine published weekly since 1952.NME sells thousands of magazines each year.
Ideology- The consumer culture is Indie as that's what the Artict monkeys base there music around, this also connects with what they wear. This is why it's a shock when Diddy is 'moshing' ( related to the metal genre )
Audience- The main audience is readers that believe that music is a big part of there lives, people who like to listen to new bands.52% readers of the NME are interested in taking a musical course/qualification. By putting a popular band on the front cover I think that NME are trying to interest young people epically males because of the colours and the bands shown.
Representation- The image shows individuality and love for music as the musician has a guitar in his hand singing so he must have passion for music because Artic Monkeys are a successful band.

Evaluation
Evaluation of College Magazine.
The college magazine I have created follows many conventions of real media products.
The image I choose for my magazine fits perfectly with a real media product because it's a medium close up. A medium close up is perfect for a magazine because it's close enough to see the identity of the person and the important eye contact, eye contact is in important because it gives the reader more involved which my model has. I think this image is suitable for my magazine because I want my magazine to represent that Wyke College is a good place to be and my model holding folders and smiling represents this. The image is also large enough to insert all crucial information. I created enough room by inserting a different image above mine that has the same background.
For the name of my magazine I have picked a short and simple one to make it remember-able. I have named it 'FRESH' which attracts the audience I want to buy and read this which is mainly new students. The font I have used for my mast head is 'eras medium ict' I have used this font because it is bold and modern which will attract the reader straight to the name. I have made the mast head at least a 5th of the page so it can also be easily seen along with a stoke effect to make it look more professional and interesting. The colours I have used for the mast head are a burgundy red similar to the models top and a salmon colour.
After this I created a subtitle underneath the mast head, this had the same font 'eras medium Ict ' the same stoke effect also. The differences from the mast head are the colours are swapped round and the fill colour is a pinky orange and the stoke line is burgundy. Another difference is it is a lot smaller, this shows that the subtitle is important but not as important as the mast head. The subtitle I created is 'your guide to college gossip’; I have chosen this because the word 'gossip' can be related to by teenagers.
The college email I have used is very simple and black in eras medium ict, I have placed it on the left side of my mast head and subtitle rotated using the transformation tool. This gives the reader an insight into where the magazine has come from and if they also need any more information.
I decided to create a skyline as in a real magazine it usually holds important information. My skyline uses a white colour and a Georgia font which makes it easy to read. My magazine reads ' MEDIA COMPETITION STARTS 5TH DECEMBER SEE PAGE 10 FOR MORE'.
On the bottom left of my magazine I have inserted a barcode which I found on Google images, this is very crucial to have on my magazine to show it has a price. This barcode is read electronically and decoded into usable information. Above this I began to create a white box to add to the top of the barcode so I could add the date, price and issue number. I have chosen to publish my magazine every two weeks, I have chosen this because there will be enough interesting things to insert into the magazine without struggling to find gossip. I believe that two weeks is a good time scale because it gives students time to relax and know what's happening in the weeks ahead without checking each couple of days. I decided the price of my magazine to be £1.40 as a fixed price unless a student of the college buys it, in which they'll get a 40p discount. This will encourage my target audience (new students) to buy it as they get discount although anyone can purchase this magazine. These prices I believe are both prices are affordable to purchase this every two weeks. The issue number I have created near my barcode is shown to be at four, this shows that the magazine is successful as it's still running and the institution have created more than one. All of these conventions follow the font style of Georgia.
I have decided to put my stories on the right hand side which isn’t conventional but I was inspired by a Faze magazine as it had stories on both sides and seemed to work. Also on my image my model seems to be leaning to the right. For the main story I have made it more central so it’s more eye catching so it’s the first place the reader will look. This stories main words are ‘ Emily McDougall’ this has the same stroke effect and in eras medium ict font as the rest of my important headlines, the fill the models name is in the same orange as the skyline box and the outline is in a burgundy. The other two kickers one above and below the main story also use the stoke effects also for the teasers and follow the same fonts and colours just switched around. Kickers are important because they are meant to lead you into the teller using catchy words. The tellers that come along with the kickers are smaller because they are less important. My tellers because they are less important are in the font Georgia with a box behind it so they are outlined in the same colours I have used in the magazine such as salmon, burgundy, black, white and orange these are my house style. The house style is very conventional is it makes the magazine look more professional.
The magazine represents the college as a whole to be a positive and fun place to be. This is represented by the image of a student smiling and looking content with college along with the stories that are fun related and academic, for example the Christmas Halloween party and the University trips. The university trips make the college look more successful as university trips are always available to colleges that get good grades.
I have attracted my audience by using an actual student from the college who they may know which will make it more interesting to read. I have also used bright colours and simple text so it’s eye catching at easy to read. The main three stories will interest new students as it’s talking about the Pozition party that would be great for new students to have fun. This magazine is designed to give new students more information on about beneficial things such as the University trips.
I have learnt that real magazine products that are successful use many different conventions. These conventions make the magazine more popular and interesting. Using things such as main headlines and images make the magazine more appealing and this is what makes a magazine successful.

print screens of creating final product
I firstly uploaded my photo into Photoshop, I choose a medium close up of my friend Emily.
I decided this image didn't have enough space above her head to insert a mast head and subtitle, skyline and email address of the college magazine so therefore I opened another similar photo copied the top of it and inserted it into my chosen photo this created more space above.
I decided this image didn't have enough space above her head to insert a mast head and subtitle, skyline and email address of the college magazine so therefore I opened another similar photo copied the top of it and inserted it into my chosen photo this created more space above.
I then added a Mast Head which for my magazine is 'FRESH' and a subtitle 'your guide to college gossip' I used different fonts for each one. For the mast head I used the font eras medium with a size of 110 wanted it to be big so it's easy to read, recognisable and modern.
For the subtitle I also used the same font but smaller so it didn't look as important. For both the mast head and the subtitle I used a stroke effect to make it look bolder.
Then I added a skyline to the top of the image in Georgia style, the only other font I am using to keep it professional and easy to read.I used a thin orange slightly transparent box behind my skyline information. The writing on my skyline I mad crisp white so it's easily read on the orange.
On the bottom left of my image I inserted an image of a bar code
after this I created a box above this to give me enough room to add a price and issue number.
Under this I added photo credit
For the teasers and kickers that I'm putting on the right third I'm doing a range of things.I have created three main stories, the most important one is about the student in the picture. This story is bigger then the rest but shares the same two fonts. The kickers for each stories are again in Georgia and the teasers in eras medium ict.
The boxes underneath these stories are a range of colours already used on the magazine. The teasers also all have the same size stoke effect to keep it consistent. All colours are similar to my house style to keep it consistent and professional.
I used these colours including the colour of the students top, black and white.
FINAL PRODUCT.
